Nurses
The key role of nurses at Northern Suburbs Medical Service (NSMS) is to
provide nursing support of a high-standard to our general practitioners
and patients, so that the best possible health care is achieved.
NSMS employs ENs (enrolled nurses) and RNs (registered nurses). Depending on the
position description, nurses can expect to also provided selected
receptionist services to patients, ensuring a wide-ranging patient-centred
nursing experience. Some our nursing staff will also visit patients in
their homes, for example to facilitate the aged-care Health Assessment
program.
As a nurse at NSMS, you will be registered with the Nursing Board of Tasmania, where your name will appear
on the Public Register.
Medication Endorsement is a standard requirement for nurses working at
this practice. A current First Aid Certificate issued by either St Johns
Ambulance or the Red Cross is also required (which can be obtained
after commencing employment if not already held). You will also need a
current driver's licence, with access to a motor vehicle when needed to
fulfil your role. Please note that all persons applying for a
position at NSMS must present an up-to-date Copy of Convictions which
is obtainable, currently without charge, from the Tasmanian Police.
Note that there can be some delay in obtaining a Copy of Convictions, and so you should contact the police
service early if you are thinking of putting in an application to work with us.
You will provide services to patients within one of the practice's surgeries and
occasionally in the patient's home. You will also assist with patient
medical education and be responsible for maintenance of patient
information confidentiality ( read our Privacy Policy). You will
be required to sign a binding agreement regarding the privacy of both
patient and all practice information, including after you leave our
employment.
Northern Suburbs Medical Service is strongly in favour of Registered
Nurses (and Enrolled Nurses where applicable) performing defined
clinical duties in or otherwise under the direction of a general
practice, consistent with recent federal government initiatives. We
have in 2005 initiated nurse-based Wound Clinics as well as
Immunisation Clinics, with our suitably trained and experienced
nurses providing clinical services under the direct or indirect
supervision of GPs. It is envisaged that well-woman Pap smear
clinics will be introduced later, providing further options and
convenience for women's health care at NSMS.
Nursing Responsibilities
Our nurses assist with the administration of the medical needs of patients which include:
taking of blood pressure, visual acuity, colour vision testing, dressings,
blood glucose/cholesterol levels, urine examination and pregnancy testing,
height, weight, lung function testing, ECG, peak-flow readings,
administration of certain injections including vaccines, completion
of medical examination pre-assessments with the patient, management
of basic intravenous fluid administration, assisting with minor surgical
procedures, and the like.
Nurses enjoying employment here will also provide critical triage services
using the telephone or in face-to-face contact, to assess the degree of
urgency of a patient's need for consultation/treatment services. Reception staff in particular appreciate the triage support that our nurse can give them
From time to time, you will also assist with the processing of accounts, taking of
money, registration of new patients, and the making of appointments.
Note that the practice has an immunisation policy, with which you must be
prepared to comply, which requires all staff to be fully-immunised against certain infections diseases, on occupational health and safety
grounds. Please be aware that immunisation technology is rapidly changing with new
products becoming available - on work-safety grounds the policy may change during your time of employment with us.
Our hours of work
can be particularly appealing, especially to nurses familiar with
institutional employment - we have no shift work and we try to be very
flexible in meeting your work-hour needs. The work is also physically less
demanding, with little or no patient lifting, transfers, etc.
You will find that NSMS is a good place to work, in the community, in a happy,
family-friendly environment.
Pay
We pay Nurses according to the Medical Practitioners (Private Sector)
Award except for the Senior Nurse position which is subject to a
service contract and for which remuneration is negotiated according
to qualifications and experience in particular as they relate to
general medical practice. We recommend that you check the award pay
and conditions before attending a job interview by
going
here.
You will need to scroll down and click on the words 'Medical Practitioners (Private Sector)
Award'. The Award is changed regularly, and you may need to check elsewhere on the government
web site to get the necessary information. Please ask us for pay details if you are
having difficulty finding them.
