Students
Our practice welcomes medical students from the University of Tasmania Medical School.
Teaching the next generation of doctors is of vital concern to our doctors, and to our local community.
It is also critical to give young medical students exposure to a great experience in the working life of general practice to help
ensure they seriously consider general practice for their future vocation.
Medical students normally attend the practice every Wednesday morning for eighteen weeks of each of the two semesters in the academic
year. This gives students the opportunity to meet the same patients on more than one occasion to experience the continuity of medical
care that is the hallmark of general practice.
Consistent with our practice policy (available on our Downloads page), patients are always
asked in advance for their consent to have medical students present in the consultation.
Students can expect to participate in a wide range of activities, including in-room consultations with a range of doctors, minor
surgical procedures, home visits, local pharmacy attendance, pathology laboratory and imaging facility attendance, nursing home and
health assessment visits, hands-on clinical software experience, front-of-house and GP triage, pharmaceutical company interaction,
educational sessions, and more.
The student's general practice placement dovetails-in with teaching activities at the Launceston General Hospital Clinical School
where first-rate teaching and clinical experience can be expected.
Tie this in with living in Launceston - one of Australia's premier regional cities - with close access to Tasmanian wilderness,
beaches, cultural amenities, great pubs and nightclubs, excellent sporting facilities including the home of Tasmanian AFL football just down the road from
the Mowbray surgery, and excellent weather, medical students who choose to travel north to Launceston and Northern Suburbs
Medical Service for general practice teaching can expect a memorable learning experience that will stand them in good stead for their
professional working lives.
And don't forget that the University of Tasmania's Newnham campus is just across the road from our practice, making it very convenient to
access all those important Uni facilities such as the libraries, Student Association, and Student Bar.
Students who would like to 'get in first' to secure a term at our practice should contact the practice manager without delay.
